When Michael Whelan read and illustrated the first Dark Tower book, he loved the story and like many fans, was thrilled when Stephen King continued the series. When he took on the task of illustrating the last book, this was the first painting he did. It was used as the endpapers for the hardcover editions. Dedicated readers will recognize hidden messages in the trees which are described by King in the story.
